Random stuff that caught my eye. |
The Loaded Hog is a resto-bar immediately across from where
the NZL boats are moored. They left the Christmas decorations up
(photo taken on 15 Jan). Looks like Santa is fixing to get munched.
As I was waiting for the NZL40 trip to depart, I heard a kid say, "but mummy,
Christmas is over!" But he said it in that south pacific anglo
twang, more Strine than NZ, "but mummy, Chreeesmssss eeees ohahvah!" "shott opp." |

This sticker was on a planter box in front of the Loaded Hog. When I was in Turkey, I noticed that Turkish Airlines was promoting its facilities as a cost-effective solution for periodic airframe overhauls. Apparently THY can perform the same services for a lot cheaper than what can be done in local markets. I overheard a radio call-in programme where the moderator's hot button was the exportation of NZ jobs. His opinion was that NZ should not fall victim to the same forces that have led to the wholesale exportation of US jobs. Personally, after a recent experience with a Delta Airlines operator whose indian accent was so strong as to render her unintelligible, I cannot help but to concur. |

I think the guy who includes all the homoerotic images in the New York Time sports sections has a friend in outdoor display advertising in NZ. |

A refreshing tidbit indicating that New Zealand has not been overrun by management consultant types eager to chisel every last cent out of a transaction. This was a minor purchase in a pharmacy, all of about NZ$6.00. The paper of the bag is printed, with a semi-glossy finish. Furthermore, SOP here is for the cashier to put a bit of tape over the flap, almost as though it were a gift. There is something 'special' about the purchase, no matter how mundane or quotidian it may be. This is such a nice change from New York where you have the pleasure of dealing with sharnelda and her shitty attitude as she throws your purchase in a brown kraft paper bag and leaves it on the counter for you to pick up. The bag is not brown because of any environmental consciousness (Ha!) but because it's cheaper. Reminds me a little of the flights on Air Canada between LGA and YYZ when coach passengers would receive a hot breakfast, with a choice of eggs and bacon, or something else. The hot breakfast was followed by coffee service, served from a separate trolley, specifically on the plane for coffee & tea service only. |
